Christmas Decorating on a Shoestring Budget

Wondering how to cut back on the costs for your Christmas decorating this year? There are some things that you can do that will still make your Christmas decorations look fantastic, but that will cut back on some of the expenses of decorating.

Thrift Shops and Garage Sales: Many people like to buy brand new decorations every year, and they often give their older decorations to thrift shops. You can often find great deals when you shop in thrift stores for Christmas decorations, and you will most likely find that they are still in very good condition, especially if they were only used for one Christmas. Likewise, keep on the lookout for Christmas decorations at garage sales too, you can often pick them up for almost nothing there.

Christmas Lights: Instead of buying new Christmas lights because your old ones just aren't working, invest some time instead. Buy some new bulbs, and then set to work to find out exactly which bulbs are blown. It can be a bit time-consuming, but it can also be a great job for one person in your family to do who perhaps isn't that gifted at decorating. This can really save a lot of money.

Reuse old Baubles: If you have Christmas tree decorations or baubles that have lost the string for hanging them on the tree, you can still use them. Set them together in a basket to make a colorful Christmas bauble display. Then set the basket--a glass bowl will do just as well--on a table, shelf, or on the mantelpiece.

Candles: You can usually pick up nice-looking candles fairly cheaply. You don't necessarily have to buy fancy patterned candles, but just choose simple red, green and white candles and put them on a candlestick or buy clay and stand them in the clay. Then, cover the clay up with Christmas cloth, or ribbons, or pine needles. Cheap and effective, they look great sitting on the table or sit around the living room. You can also match silver, gold and blue to make a great Christmas color scheme as well.

Bake Cookies: Not only will you save money on store-bought cookies and cakes, but you will probably have a lot of fun if you get a few people together and bake your own cookies. Play Christmas music in the background, drink a glass of wine or hot chocolate, and start up your own Christmas tradition of baking. It can be lots of fun and really brings out the festive spirit of Christmas.

Christmas Music: No Christmas is complete without Christmas music wafting throughout the house. It is great to play during meal times, soft muted Christmas carols or instrumentals, and it's also fantastic to work to, to decorate too and to bake too. Make sure you have a big enough selection though so you're not listening to the same songs or album over and over again. Once Christmas is over, pack away the Christmas music till next year.

Pine Cones: If you live in an area where you can freely gather pine cones, do so. They make great Christmas decorations. Either leave them natural-looking, or you can paint them silver or gold, or even spray 'snow' on them. Scatter them under the tree and in other areas around your room, to add to the Christmas look.

Decorate your Table and Bring out Christmas Table-wear: Look for your most Christmassy looking tablecloth and use that for your Christmas meals, and dinners leading up to Christmas. Also, bring out your most colorful dinnerware and serve your meals on that. If you want to, you can invest in this type of tableware during the year, or over a few years, so that you gradually build up a special Christmas set. Again, once Christmas is over, tuck it away till next year.

Table Piece: Design your own centerpiece for your table. It can be easily done with a sawn-off tree branch, some ribbons, a bit of clay and candles. Be inventive and make up a natural-looking Christmas centerpiece for your table. If you make it sturdy enough you can use it year after year.

Christmas Teddies and Dolls: Get your children in on the act. It's really fun to see little teddy bears or dolls all decked out in Christmas outfits. If you don't have anything specifically Christmassy for them, just tie ribbons around them and give them a little Christmas present to hold under their armor to sit on their lap.

Cluster the teddies and dolls around the room, for a real cute festive look.

These are just a few ideas of how you can cut costs this Christmas. Just think, if you are able to save on your decorations you'll have more money to invest in either your Christmas presents or your Christmas celebrations. And, it can look just as nice as if you had spent a lot of money on expensive ornaments and decorations.

Live Cricket Streaming - Will You Pay the Price?

Finding free live cricket streaming on the internet has become something of a search for the holy grail, where even the best information often leads to a complete myth.

This myth can be a text service, a recorded highlights package, an up-front charge for a dodgy embedded video feed, or even an unsafe site. The point has been reached where free live cricket streaming is often attached to the description of an unconnected web page, just to attract visitors.

So, where to find this holy grail? Despite the claims of some sites, very little is free on the internet, and free live cricket streaming is limited to short term packages from some of the major broadcasters. For example, ESPN Star provided free online coverage of the 2009 Women's World Cup.

On the whole, you will need to buy a "cricket pass" or "cricket ticket" to cover a selected package of live cricket events. This might be a test series, or a package of test and ODI cricket, or even a one year pass to a selection of international cricket events. The packages vary in price and content, to reflect the current fixture list.

For example, a package showing the produced and interactive highlights of the first four Ashes tests and live coverage of the fifth test of the 2006-2007 series cost around US $20. At the other extreme is the recent 12 month package from Willow TV, which was set at US$299. This schedule covered the India tour of New Zealand, 2009 Indian Premier League, ICC Twenty20 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and Champions League T20. Watch Sports Online Free

There are also hardware and software requirements. For example, for Willow TV you will need Broadband, Internet Explorer 5.0 or above, Windows Media Player 7.1 or above, Windows 98 or later and a minimum of Pentium III, 128 Mb RAM, a 24 bit true colour card and 16 bit sound card. Willow TV do provide a test clip so you can check if your system can receive free video streaming.

If you're on dial up, cricket streaming just isn't an option. But even with broadband, buffering delays and poor picture quality can still be a problem, so beware of any broadcaster who insists on taking your money before showing you the quality of their transmission.

So, who are the best online broadcasters? Willow TV has been the market leader since 2003, when it began live internet streaming of major cricket events. They are based in California, but with offices in Bangalore to keep in touch with Indian cricket fans. Their coverage includes nifty features like interactive scorecards and high bandwidth transmissions, as well as mobile and IM updates. Although Willow TV are a subscription service, their latest offerings include free live cricket streaming for a short term, providing you subscribe to one of their business partners.

Cricket Australia TV (CATV) provides live cricket streaming and cricket highlights through Channel 9. Before you consider signing up, look at the "Having problems watching the video?" link on the CATV home page. Amongst other issues, this shows that their cricket highlights are available in many countries, but live coverage is very restricted.

If you're already a subscriber to Sky Sports in UK or Ireland, then you can watch live cricket online using SkyPlayer, for no extra charge. If you don't have Sky, this is still available as a subscription service. Another option is to stream Sky Sports direct to your mobile phone using a mobile internet link, though don't expect great picture quality - you can find out more on the Vodaphone Cricket web page.

ESPN Star offer some intermittent streaming services to their Asian customers - check out their web site for their latest online schedules.

So, the options for genuine live cricket streaming are still limited, though if you're a cricket fan who can't access satellite TV then they are a great idea. However, the prospect of free live cricket streaming for all is still remote and likely to remain so while major TV broadcasters dominate the battles for cricket media rights.
